# Using valheimdb.com in guides, blogs, forums and videos

valheimdb.com is an unofficial Valheim database (game version 1.0.20): items with recipes and upgrade costs, creatures, building pieces and locations, four calculators (block and parry, damage, food, comfort) and a seed map. Every card, table and embed shows live data read from the game files and updates itself after each patch. It is free to use in guides, videos, blogs, wikis and forums — keep the visible link to valheimdb.com that every format carries. ## 1. Find the thing you want

Four sections have a card (a page with a hover-card, copy menu and picture). Every thing has its own page; there are no category anchors to a row on a list page.

- Search: `https://valheimdb.com/search?q=troll` (a page); the index every search uses, as JSON: `https://valheimdb.com/search.json` (`label`, `sub`, `href`). There are no separate /raw datasets on this site: the card JSON, `names.json` and `search.json` are the machine-readable data.

## 2. Reddit, Discord, Steam guide, YouTube description, forum post (no code)

On every item, creature, building piece and location page, press **Copy for guides ▾** in the header; table rows that link to one have **Copy ▾**; recipes have **Copy recipe**. The menu: Link, Reddit (Markdown), Discord, Steam / forum (BBCode), Text (YouTube, chat), HTML (blog), Copy image / Download PNG (the card as a picture; "Picture size" switches card size and 1200×630), the game formats, and + Add to list. The real output for the Iron Sword:

**Picture** — Steam and Reddit need the image uploaded: use **Download PNG**, then upload the file to the guide or post. Discord takes **Copy image** pasted straight into a message.

**Game formats** (the last items of the menu; they copy exactly this text):

**Several things at once:** press **+ Add to list** on any card (up to 100, kept in your browser); the list waits bottom right; **Export** gives a Reddit table, a Discord list, a Steam / forum table, text, HTML, one picture, a link to a page showing the list (`https://valheimdb.com/list?i=section/slug,section/slug`) and one spawn command per line. ## 3. Your own website or blog (HTML)

Step 1 — add once, before `</body>` (or in the theme's footer):

Step 2 — link to our pages as usual. Every link to valheimdb.com/items|creatures|building|locations/<slug> (and `/go/…` links) shows the game's card on hover, and on a phone at the first tap (a second tap opens the page):

Options: set `window.valheimdbTooltips = { theme: "light" }` in a script **before** the script tag, or put `data-` attributes on the script tag itself (`data-theme="light"`, `data-icon-links="false"`).

Hooks (all need the script):

- **Inline card** — the link becomes the whole card in the page (your link stays as its name): `<a href="https://valheimdb.com/items/iron-sword" data-valheimdb-card>Iron Sword</a>`
- **Table** (`data-valheimdb-list`) — a table of cards, each row linking to its page. - **Build embed** (`data-valheimdb-embed`) — the only kind that works here is a food combo, `food:<ID,ID,ID>` with up to three item IDs as in the food calculator (see `https://valheimdb.com/item-ids`); it shows what the three bring you to. There is no Copy → Embed entry for it: write the code yourself or copy the `foods=` part from the food calculator's address. Fallback link inside the div:

- **Autolink** — names of our things in a text become links, the first time each: `<p data-valheimdb-autolink>Bring a Iron Sword for the Troll.</p>`
- **Opt out** — `data-no-tip` (or `data-valheimdb="none"`) on a link: no card.
- **Any element** — `data-valheimdb="section/slug"` shows that card on any element: `<span data-valheimdb="creatures/troll">the boss</span>`

Privacy: the script sets no cookies and stores nothing on readers. It loads the card JSON and icons from valheimdb.com; the optional usage ping (page host and counts only) is turned off with `ping: false`.

## 4. WordPress

**Option A — plugin.** Download `https://valheimdb.com/downloads/gamedb-cards.zip` → Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin → Activate → Settings → GameDB Cards (tick valheimdb.com). Shortcodes:

- `[gamedb site="valheimdb" id="items/iron-sword"]` — a link with a hover card
- `[gamedb site="valheimdb" id="items/iron-sword" mode="card"]` — an inline card
- `[gamedb site="valheimdb" id="items/iron-sword,items/bronze-mace,creatures/troll" mode="list"]` — a table

The plugin also turns a valheimdb.com link pasted on its own line in the block editor into an embedded card. It also adds a "GameDB card" block.

**Option B — no plugin.** Add the script tag of section 3 (theme footer, or a "Custom HTML" block) and use links and the `data-` hooks as in section 3.

## 5. Notion, Ghost, Discourse, Medium, Substack and other editors

Paste the page link on a line of its own. Editors that read oEmbed get an embedded card from `https://valheimdb.com/oembed?url=<page url>&format=json` (JSON only; it answers with an iframe of `https://valheimdb.com/embed`). Editors that only read Open Graph show a preview card (name, key stats, icon).

- Embed (iframe): item, creature, building and location pages (`https://valheimdb.com/items/iron-sword`), list pages (`https://valheimdb.com/list?i=items/iron-sword,items/bronze-mace,creatures/troll`), food calculator links with `?foods=` (`https://valheimdb.com/tools/food-calculator?foods=QueensJam,CookedMeat,Raspberry`).
- Preview card only: every other page (calculators other than food, the seed map, rankings).
- An iframe by hand: `https://valheimdb.com/embed?u=/items/iron-sword` (a card), `https://valheimdb.com/embed?l=items/iron-sword,items/bronze-mace,creatures/troll` (a table), `https://valheimdb.com/embed?b=food:QueensJam,CookedMeat,Raspberry` (the food combo). ## 6. Forums (phpBB, XenForo)

A custom BBCode lets members write `[valheim]Iron Sword[/valheim]`: it becomes a link to the page (a card on hover when the forum template loads the script). The link goes through `https://valheimdb.com/go/`, which finds the page by name (or by `items.iron-sword`) and otherwise opens the search.

**phpBB 3.2 / 3.3** — ACP → Posting → BBCodes → Add a new BBCode.

- BBCode usage: `[valheim]{INTTEXT}[/valheim]`
- HTML replacement: `<a href="https://valheimdb.com/go/{INTTEXT}">{INTTEXT}</a>`
- `{INTTEXT}` takes letters (accents too), numbers, spaces, commas, dots, plus, minus, hyphens and underscores, no apostrophes: write `Queens Jam`, not `Queen's Jam` (it still finds the page). Do not use `{TEXT}` in a link.
- For cards, add the script line to the style's `overall_footer.html`.

**XenForo 2** — Admin control panel → Custom BB codes → Add BB code.

- BB code tag: `valheim`; Replacement mode: simple replacement; Supports option parameter: No.
- HTML replacement: `<a href="https://valheimdb.com/go/{text}">{text}</a>`
- Under "Within this BB code", turn off parsing other BB codes and auto-linking.
- For cards, add the script line to the `PAGE_CONTAINER` template before `</body>`.

Members then write `[valheim]Iron Sword[/valheim]`, `[valheim]Troll[/valheim]` or `[valheim]building.workbench[/valheim]`. Steam guides and discussions cannot run scripts or custom codes: use the Steam / forum (BBCode) format of section 2 and upload pictures.
