Can't connect

Messages, causes, fixes

“Incompatible version”

Cause: The two games' network versions differ (40 in 1.0.17). The server compares only this number, not the patch number, so two patches with the same network version can play together.

Fix: Update both the game and the server to the latest patch.

Server log: “has incompatible version”

“Banned”

Cause: Your ID is in bannedlist.txt, or permittedlist.txt lists anyone and you're not in it.

Fix: The host removes you from bannedlist.txt or adds you to permittedlist.txt.

Server log: “is blacklisted or not in whitelist.”

Cause: On a Steam server: Steam couldn't confirm your session ticket. The game shows this as Banned too.

Fix: Restart Steam and the game, then join again.

Server log: “has invalid session ticket”

Cause: On a crossplay server: the host has blocked your account on their platform.

Fix: Only the host can unblock you.

Server log: “The player with the ID is blocked by the server owner (you), disconnecting them!”

“The server owner does not allow users from other platforms than their own to play on their server.”

Cause: The host's platform account doesn't allow crossplay, and you're on a different platform.

Fix: The host allows cross-platform play in their platform's privacy settings, or a player on the host's platform hosts.

Server log: “Peer diconnected due to server platform privileges disallowing crossplay. Server platform”

“Failed to connect”

Cause: The connection dropped before the server answered: wrong address or port, the server isn't running, or a firewall/router doesn't let the game through.

Fix: Check the IP and port (an address typed without a port uses 2456) and that the server is running; on a server you host, open UDP 2456–2457.

Cause: On a crossplay server: your account wasn't authenticated with PlayFab.

Fix: Sign in to your platform and restart the game.

Server log: “disconnected because they were not authenticated!”

“Server full”

Cause: 10 players are already connected.

Fix: Wait for someone to leave.

Server log: “disconnected due to server is full”

“Wrong password”

Cause: The password you typed doesn't match the server's. The game sends it hashed, so it must match exactly, upper and lower case included.

Fix: Retype it; ask the host for the password they set, or join through the host's platform invite, which skips the password.

Server log: “has wrong password”

“Already connected”

Cause: The server already has a connection from your game session.

Fix: Restart the game and join again.

Server log: “Already connected to peer with UID”

“Disconnected”

Cause: You were in, then the connection to the server was lost or the server shut down.

Fix: Join again once the server is back up.

“Your platform privilege settings prevent you from playing on servers that allow crossplay with other platforms.”

Cause: You're joining a crossplay server from a different platform, and your own account's settings don't allow cross-platform play.

Fix: Allow cross-network play in your platform account's privacy settings.

“You have been kicked from the server.”

Cause: An admin used the kick command, or the host kicked you from the player list.

Fix: Ask the host.

What a server checks, in order

  1. Incompatible version — The two games' network versions differ (40 in 1.0.17). The server compares only this number, not the patch number, so two patches with the same network version can play together.
  2. Banned — Your ID is in bannedlist.txt, or permittedlist.txt lists anyone and you're not in it.
  3. Banned — On a Steam server: Steam couldn't confirm your session ticket. The game shows this as Banned too.
  4. Banned — On a crossplay server: the host has blocked your account on their platform.
  5. The server owner does not allow users from ot… — The host's platform account doesn't allow crossplay, and you're on a different platform.
  6. Failed to connect — On a crossplay server: your account wasn't authenticated with PlayFab.
  7. Server full — 10 players are already connected.
  8. Wrong password — The password you typed doesn't match the server's. The game sends it hashed, so it must match exactly, upper and lower case included.
  9. Already connected — The server already has a connection from your game session.

ZNet.RPC_PeerInfo stops at the first check a player fails, so a player with a wrong password and an old game sees only the version error.

Adding a server or a code

“Couldn't resolve join code”

Cause: No running crossplay session has that code, or you aren't logged in to PlayFab. Codes are new each time the server starts.

Fix: Ask the host for the code shown in their menu now.

“The input is not a valid IP, URL or invite code!”

Cause: The box takes [IP/URL]:[port] or [6 digit invite code].

Fix: Type the 6 digits alone, or IP:port without spaces.

“Error loading world file. Check backups!”

Cause: The host's or server's world file couldn't be read.

Fix: Restore one of the world's backups: Manage saves → Restore backup in the game, or a _backup_auto- file on a server.

Ports, launch arguments and admin lists: dedicated server. Hosting, join codes and crossplay: playing with friends.

Questions

›Why does Valheim say Failed to connect?

The connection closed before the server answered: a wrong address or port (an IP typed without a port uses 2456), a server that isn't running, or a router or firewall that doesn't let the game through to port 2456. On a crossplay server it also means your account wasn't authenticated with PlayFab.

›Why does Valheim keep saying Wrong password?

The game sends the password hashed and the server compares it exactly, upper and lower case included. Retype it; if the host changed it, the new one is needed.

›What does Incompatible version mean?

The server and your game have different network versions (40 in 1.0.17). The server compares only that number, so update whichever side is behind.

›Why does it say Banned when nobody banned me?

Banned also shows when a Steam server can't confirm your Steam session ticket, when permittedlist.txt lists players and you're not among them, and on a crossplay server when the host has blocked your account.

›Why won't my join code work?

A code belongs to one running crossplay session and a new one is made each time it starts. "Couldn't resolve join code" means no running session has it — ask for the code in the host's menu now.

Formula

The checks, their order and the server's log lines are read from the game's code each patch; the messages are the game's own English.
